Terry Roscoe

Terry Roscoe recently retired as an FA Licensed Tutor after 12 years. Terry was presented with an award at LCFA for forty years of service to football.



Fitness Training

Wednesday nights - 18:30 to 19:30 (approx) on the running track at Sutton High.
Cost is £2.70 which includes use of changing rooms and showers.

Society AGM

The Societies Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 5th September 2011 at 19:45. Please make an effort to attend.

The following positions will be up for election:

Pre-Season Training

Training sessions are taking place every Tuesday from 18:30 to 19:30 on Sutton Manor playing fields. Any member is welcome to attend and the training will be tailored to your fitness level.

Society Fantasy Premier League

The Society is running a fantasy premier league competition for 2011/2012. Entry is £1 a team with half of the money going to the RA Benevolent Fund and half to the winning team. Sign up at http://fantasyfootball.skysports.com/

Once you have a team let John Blackburn know your team name and he'll add you to the Society league.

Summer of Futsal

While most society members have been enjoying a summer break Peter Nurse has been very busy refereeing the culmination of the futsal season.

Peter refereed at the league grand finals in Guildford in early June and then at the FA Futsal Cup finals in Birmingham in late July. Between those two high points of the domestic futsal calendar Peter refereed the international game between England & Greece in Sheffield.

However the highlight of the summer was undoubtedly ten days in Finland refereeing at the European Universities Futsal Championships. The tournament was a fantastic opportunity to learn and referee some extremely high quality futsal. The highlight of Peter's tournament was refereeing University of Minho (Portugal) vs University of Coimbra (Portugal) in a game that would normally grace the Portuguese national futsal league.

England vs Montenegro Futsal International

Futsal Appointment

Peter Nurse has been appointed to referee at the European University Futsal Championships which are taking place in Tampere, Finland between 17th and 24th July 2010. More details about the championships are available from www.eucfutsal2011.com

May Meeting Minutes

Futsal Appointments

Peter Nurse has been appointed to referee England vs Greece in Sheffield on 24th and 25th of June 2011.

Peter has also been appointed to referee the National Futsal League Playoff Grand Finals (11th & 12th June) in Guildford and at the FA Futsal Cup (8-11th July) in Sheffield.

Peter was timekeeper on the playoff final and refereed The FA Futsal Cup final in 2010.

October Meeting Guest Speaker - Chris Foy

We are very pleased to announce that the guest speaker at our October meeting will be FA Cup Final Referee Chris Foy. Chris is a member of the St Helens Society so please make a special effort to come to meeting to congratulate Chris on refereeing the biggest game in domestic football.

Futsal

Peter Nurse recently spent a weekend in Sheffield refereeing at The FA Futsal Cup finals.
After successful group games Peter was appointed to referee the cup final with FIFA

Pre-Season Training:

With the start of the football season coming into view I'm going to start running pre-season fitness session on Sutton Manor playing fields.

Sessions will begin this Tuesday (13th) at 18:30 and last for approximately 1 hour.

The training will take place on grass so please bring appropriate footwear.

2010 FA Cup Final:

Many congratulations to Chris Foy who has been appointed to referee The FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Portsmouth on 15th May at Wembley. Everyone at the Society sends their congratulations to Chris.

If you would like the go to the FA Cup Final, the Society has the option of up to 2 tickets from Lancs FA. Please contact the Secretary ASAP if you are interested in attending.

Starting at the September meeting, the Society will be running a Champions League Buster competition. All teams in the competition will go into sealed envelopes which can be bought at a cost of £5 each.

Barry Kilgallon

Following a few visits to our web site looking for information on Barry Kilgallon I followed them up and I'm sad to report that Barry passed away on Tuesday of this week (25th August).

The following is taken from the Scottish Football League web site:

"SFA Referee observer Barry Kilgallon passed away on August 25 after a losing an 18 month battle against cancer. Kilgallon refereed the Scottish Junior Cup between Petershill and Pollok in 1985 before moving on to a role in developing match officials."

Some of the longer serving members will remember Barry.  There is a photo in the 'Archive Photos' section of the web site that includes Barry.

Phil Andrews

It is with regret that we have learnt of the death of Phil Andrews. Phil passed away on Saturday 7th March 2009 at the age of 70.

There will be a service at St Helens Crematorium on Tuesday 17th March at 11am.

Thanks to Eric Bond for passing on the information.

Any donations sent in lieu of flowers should be sent via his wife Doreen in aid of the Alzheimers' Society.

Mark Lyth - LMSA Photos

EGM & Fees for 2009/2010

There will be a short EGM before the April meeting to set fees for 2009/2010. It is proposed that fee's will be reduced from £27 for £22. This will be discussed by the Committee and voted on at the EGM.

Please note that your current membership expires on 31st March 2009 and if you wish to remain covered by RA insurance you must renew your membership at the April meeting.

The proposed £22 is only one match fee and offers excellent value for money.

Mark Lyth - LMSA Presentation

At our March meeting (2nd March) Mark Lyth, current Vice President of the Society, will be presented with his Long and Meritorious Service Award (LMSA).

Ian Davies from the RA Board will be in attendance to make the RA presentation to Mark. Select Group Referee and former Society member Chris Foy will be in attendance to make a presentation to Mark from the Society. Chris will also be running a training session.

A hot pot supper will be provided for all in attendance and there will be a raffle.

Please make every effort to attend the March meeting. Please note the meeting will start at 19:30.

Geoff White

It is with regret that we have learnt of the death of Geoff White. A number of St Helens Society members visited Geoff during his short illness.

Geoff's funeral will take place on Friday 30th January at Emmanuel Church, Cambridge Road, Southport, PR9 9PU.  The service starts at 11:30am.  It will then move to Southport Crematorium for 12:30pm

George Foster

It is with regret that we have learnt of the sudden death of George on Friday 14th November. His funeral is on Wednesday 26th November at Our Lady's Help of Christians, Portico (10:30am) followed by cremation at St Helens Crematorium (12:00pm).

George was a former Chairman of our Society and at one time shared the Training Officer's role with John Cowley. He was also a Vice-President for a number of years.

Geoff White - Life Membership Award

Geoff White (Southport RA) received his RA Life Membership award at Conference this year.
Southport are holding an celebration on Thursday 20th November (8pm start) at Southport Trinity Football Club.
Geoff will be presented with his award by Alan Poulain, Chairman of the RAE.
A hotpot supper with be provided, if you wish to attend please contact me so I can pass on numbers to Southport.

Notice of EGM

On the 7th April 2008 the St Helens Referees' Society will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting.

Society rules require 28 days notice to be given before an EGM can take place.

The EGM will take place directly before the April monthly meeting and members will be asked to discuss a proposed rise in membership fees in-line with an increase in fees from the Referees' Association. 

It is proposed that full membership rises to £27 (from £25) and junior membership to £18 (from £15).

Please note that your current membership expires on the 31st March and therefore 2008/2009 membership will be due at April's meeting.

Guest Speakers for 2008

Steve Stewart is the guest speaker at the January meeting. Steve was recently voted the best speaker at the RAE conference. Since then he's spoken at Societies and County FA's all over the country. Make sure you don't miss out!

January Meeting

Steve Stewart will be guest speaker at the January meeting. Steve was voted the best speaker at this years RAE conference which is a fantastic achievement considering some of the names on the list of speakers. Don't miss the January meeting!

Honoured Member Len Kelly

Some members may already be aware of the poor health of Honoured Member Len Kelly. Len suffered a mini-stroke last weekend and has been recovering at Whiston Hospital. The latest news I have is that Len is recovering well and will be transferred to St Helens hospital to continue his recovery and then home. If anyone would like information on contacting Len or visiting arrangements please contact me for details.

2007/2008 Appointments Section

There are now separate appointments sections for the 2007/2008 and 2006/2007 seasons. First congratulations of the season go to Rob Deakin who has been appointed to the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. Further details in the appointments section.

Congratulations also to Society member Bill Roberts who has been elected District Representative for the St Helens Area to LCFA.

Former Society Member News

Congratulations to former Society member Chris Foy who has been appointed 4th Official on the season opening Community Shield between Premier League Champions Manchester United and FA Cup winners Chelsea. The game will be played at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 5th August - KO 3pm.

Important CRB & Child Protection Notice

All members should already be aware of the need for ALL referees to pass a CRB check (Criminal Records Bureau) and attend a child protection course.

If you have not completed both of the above you will NOT be able to register as a referee with LCFA next season. LCFA are in the process of writing to all referees that they believe are not currently covered.

A copy of the letter from LCFA which includes details of how to obtain a CRB check and the options available for child protection courses is available HERE.

Final Society Meeting of the Season

This seasons final Society meeting is taking place on Monday 7th of May.  Can I remind all members that Society fees are now due.  A membership form is available from the Information page on the web site or alternatively contact John Blackburn.  You will not be covered by the RAE insurance until you have paid your membership fee.

National Referees Training Day

Final request for any members that would like to go by coach to the RAE National Referees Training Day on Saturday 9th June.  The cost of the coach is just £5.  It will pick up and drop off in St Helens.  Contact me ASAP if you wish to attend.

Special congratulations to Dennis Deluce who's appointment to the Reg Oliver Cup Final, it is believed, will make him the first person to have refereed each of the 6 cup finals in the Warrington league.

Former Society Member News

The St Helens Referees' Society sends its congratulations to former member and Select Group Referee Chris Foy. Chris was 4th Official at the England vs Italy U21s international on Saturday 24th of March. This make Chris Foy the first English official to be appointed to a competitive fixture at the new Wembley Stadium.

Society News

At last nights E.G.M. a vote was taken on an increase in the Society fee. The fee for the 2007/2008 season is £25 for adult members. Fees are due now. A membership form will be available via the web site shortly

RAE National Conference

The RAE National Conference is taking place in Warwick on June 8th and 9th. Information about the event is available HERE. If you would like to attend please contact the Secretary who can provide the necessary forms.

If any members would just like to attend the National Training Day (At RAE Conference) on Saturday 9th June only then Geoff White is trying to organise coach transport. It is hoped that the cost can be kept as low as £5 per person. If you would like more information please contact the Secretary.

Eve of Final Rally

With this years FA Cup Final being held at Wembley (fingers crossed) the RAE Eve of Final Rally event has moved from Cardiff to London. This year's event is being hosted at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium on Friday 18th May. Further details can be found HERE.

Tickets are £12.50 If you would like to attend please contact the Secretary so he can complete the necessary forms.

JJ Richardson Memorial Quiz- Update!

Congratulations to the St Helens Society Quiz team of Bill Roberts, John Blackburn, Peter Nurse, Fran Keegan & Mark Fife who staged an amazing comeback to retain the JJ Richardson Memorial Quiz Trophy.

St Helens weren't doing too well in the early rounds, but somehow managed to finish joint first, on 99 points, at the end of the 5th and final round. It then took no less than 4 tie-break questions to produce a winner! Well done to Mark Fife for getting the answer right to the winning question. A photo is available in the 'Photos' section.

LCFA Quiz

Well done to the St Helens Society quiz team who came a very close 2nd to Liverpool Sunday at the annual LCFA quiz last night.

The St Helens team of John Blackburn, Peter Nurse, Mark Fife and late replacement Terry Roscoe missed out on first prize by only three points.

Peter Nurse and Keith Jones (Liverpool Sunday) shared the LCFA Arthur Derbyshire Memorial Trophy for the highest individual score.

Liverpool Sunday Society are hosting the JJ Richardson Trophy Quiz on Tuesday 20th March starting at 8pm. It promises to be another great night. Any members wishing to attend please contact the Secretary. A hotpot supper will be provided.
